Sampler Afghan

After having gleaned so much from other crafters' videos and blogs, I've decided to start posting some of my projects in hopes that my experiences might help a beginner.  Right now, I'm working on assembling a sampler afghan.  The pattern for this blanket is found in this book:

So far so good, right?  Well, now on to the tricky job of assembling all the parts.  I'm planning to use a trick I've learned for joining the pieces and create a different border than the pattern suggests.
